Hera Pheri

Remembered as one of the best comedy films in Bollywood and a cult classic, Hera Pheri stars Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty and was released in the year 2000. Akshay Kumar transformed from being an action hero and excelled his character as the mischievous Raju with his inexplicably brilliant comic timing. The film is voted as the best Bollywood comedy film of all time in an online poll.

Rustom

Akshay Kumar played an honourable office of the Indian Navy with dignity and valour. Looking ever so handsome in his clean cut suit Akshay was a vision in white and carried this look to perfection and did his character Commander Rustom Pavri’s justice, keeping his performance largely understated, conveying more with his silences than words. Akshay Kumar won the prestigious National Award for Rustom.

Akshay Kumar’s character Havildar Ishar Singh was loved by both the critics and the audiences. The film is based on the battle of Saragarhi fought between the British Indian army’s Sikh Regiment and Afghan tribesmen in September 1897. The British Indian contingent comprising 21 Sikh soldiers were attacked by around 10,000 Afghans and decided to fight to the death, which is considered as one of history’s greatest last-stands.

Pad Man

One film that got the world talking about periods. Paying tribute to the man who promoted women’s health and hygiene in the country, Pad Man is a true story based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, also known as  “India’s Menstrual Man”. Giving out an impactful message, the film shows Akshay as a doting husband who not only avenges to promote the use of sanitary napkins to his wife but also to the entire nation despite facing dissent from his family. The film definitely created a stir and encouraged people to talk about periods with no stigmas attached. With the awareness created by Pad Man especially in India, it is no surprise that it helped play a role in exempting the GST on sanitary pads which was earlier attracting a rate of 18%.

Mission Mangal

A recent success for Akshay Kumar, Mission Mangal is based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who contributed to the Mars Orbiter Mission, India’s first interplanetary expedition. The multistarrer film showed the journey of a group of scientists, who despite setbacks came out successful in launching The MoM (Mars Orbiter Mission) satellite making India the 4th country in the world to do so and the first country to do it in the first attempt. Mission Mangal is Akshay Kumar’s highest grossing film.

Here’s wishing the mega superstar a very happy birthday.
