‘Masaan’ means to fly solo, and that is exactly the type of film this is. The characters in this film are shown tackling different societal problems which reside in India such as class and gender inequality. The story takes place in the holy city of Benares, and knits two different stories, yet conjoins them at a focal point. After being an assistant director on Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Masaan’ is a bold attempt. This film does not fall into the mainstream cinema category and has award winning actors like Richa Chadda and Sanjay Mishra who are famous for receiving critical praise for their films. They both play a father-daughter role in the film, and Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi (who belong to different classes) play each others love interests. The director ventures out into the world of practical, heartfelt, drama which touches audiences with ease. The film was released on May 19, 2015 in Cannes, and will now be released on July 24, 2015 in India.
