As Indian cinema revisits the legacy of Guru Dutt on his centenary, a provocative reassessment is quietly gaining traction. While his films like ‘Pyaasa’ and ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ are etched into the cultural memory, some contemporary filmmakers are beginning to question the long-held reverence for Dutt’s on-screen presence. At a recent tribute event, acclaimed director Hansal Mehta stirred conversation with a candid reflection: “The principal performances in Guru Dutt’s films are remarkably not great. This is my personal, unpopular opinion – Guru Dutt himself was not a great actor. But the craft, the overall cinema of that moment was stronger. It wasn’t dependent on that one central performance.” Rather than diminishing Dutt’s stature, Mehta’s remarks seem to elevate his directorial genius. “It was all the elements of cinema coming together – lighting, framing the way the scenes were staged,” he explained, pointing to a holistic vision that transcended individual performances. Interestingly, ‘Pyaasa’ wasn’t even conceived with Dutt in the lead – a detail that now feels emblematic of his commitment to storytelling over stardom. Dutt had approached legendary Dilip Kumar to lead the film.
