Mohit Suri’s Bet On Amrita Singh

When Mohit Suri was shaping the gritty world of ‘Kalyug’ (2005), he didn’t just seek actors – he sought authenticity. Amid personal upheaval, Amrita Singh was far from the industry’s radar navigating a turbulent divorce from Saif Ali Khan. Yet, the director saw in her a force that couldn’t be scripted. Speaking with Radio Nasha, Mohit said, “I remember Kunal Deshmukh and I went to meet Amrita ma’am. I narrated the story to her, saying I wanted her to play a character who dominated a male-dominated industry, a very strong female character. After finishing the narration, she said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.’” But instinct overruled intention. Moments after leaving, Suri had a revelation, “We committed a mistake, ma’am. You be exactly who you are, we want you just like that.” Amrita’s reply was electric: “Yes, I was thinking the same, like who can dominate me? I am already dominating.” The decision wasn’t just artistic, it was symbolic. Recommended by Mahesh Bhatt, Singh’s casting became a statement of resilience and reinvention. Her performance, raw and commanding, anchored the film’s emotional weight. And as ‘Kalyug’s’ soundtrack soared to chart-topping success, Singh’s portrayal reminded audiences that true power doesn’t need permission, it simply arrives.
