My first thoughts after watching this film: Wow! What a fun movie!
I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this film. After all, it’s the first of its kind. But believe me when I say, even the most stiff people will be groovin’ in their seats! I was a fan of soca music & Caribbean culture before the movie, but now I’m hooked for life. This movie shows just how vibrant, fun & colorful the West Indies truly is. Trinidad & Tobago carnival looks like an experience of a lifetime and it’s been depicted so beautifully in this film.
This movie was actually pretty similar to a Bollywood film. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy and girl face family/societal opposition. Boy and girl fight for their love. The story was sweet & simple, but far too predictable. However, Natalie Perera as Anita Panchouri & Machel as Lee did a fantastic job in their respective roles. Their chemistry was electric! Kabir Bedi as Anita’s father also delivered a great performance.
The only downfall to this film, was its ending. It seemed a bit rushed-through and came off looking a little cheesy. Apart from that, the film was a good one time watch. It was fun, stylish & full of energy! If anything, I’d watch it again and maybe even a third time just for the music! The songs were infectious! ‘I forget’, sung by Machel Montano himself, will be stuck in your head long after the movie is over
Go watch it!
