On The Popcorn Hour podcast, Kiran Rao shared which Korean television series has captured her creative imagination. Among the K-dramas she loves, one stands out as a potential project for her to bring to Indian audiences. “The Best K-drama is a show called ‘Reply 1988’. It’s a fantastic show. It’s actually set in 1988. In fact, that’s something I would love to remake,” she stated. What draws Kiran to the series isn’t merely its narrative appeal or its time-period setting – it’s the way the story treats its older generation. Rather than positioning mothers and fathers as background players whose sole function is to guide the plot or oversee the younger leads, ‘Reply 1988’ creates fully realised lives for them. These characters experience their own personal challenges, navigate romantic relationships and grapple with regrets and setbacks.
