In a check bounce case the Andheri magistrate court in Mumbai sentenced director Ram Gopal Varma to three months of simple imprisonment and ordered him to pay Rs. 3.72 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months. Failure to pay will result in an additional three-month jail term. Varma, absent during the judgment now faces a non-bailable warrant. The case was initiated by Shree, represented by Maheshchandra Mishra, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, concerning bounced cheques due to insufficient funds. The complainant’s lawyers, Rajesh Patel and Alok Singh, allege that Varma’s production company received hard disks from February to March 2018, amounting to Rs 2.38 lakh, for which a cheque issued on June 1, 2018, bounced. Another cheque, dated August 22, 2018 also bounced. Varma clarified on X, “With regard to the news about me and the Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7-year-old case of Rs 2,38,000, relating to my ex-employee. My advocates are attending to it. Since the matter is in court, I cannot say anything further.”
