The release of ‘Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke’ from ‘KD: The Devil’ in March quickly became a flashpoint in public discourse. Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt’s performance drew widespread criticism with many objecting to the lyrics and choreography. The uproar reached the National Commission for Women (NCW), which initiated proceedings on grounds of obscenity. On April 27th Sanjay Dutt appeared before the commission accompanied by his lawyer and expressed regret. His counsel explained, “Sanjay Dutt today appeared before the National Commission for Women and out of his utmost regard for women and for the commission, he said that he was not aware of the wordings but still without prejudice, he has offered an apology and he has also offered voluntarily to sponsor education for 50 children from the tribal community. He said when it was recorded, it was recorded in some other language.” The commission had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the controversy, underscoring the seriousness with which the matter was viewed.
