Whispers of a sequel to ‘Tumbbad’ have finally solidified into reality. Cameras are rolling once again and this time with Nawazuddin Siddiqui stepping into a shadowy realm of folklore and unease in ‘Tumbbad 2’. The production has taken over Madh Island, where Sohum Shah and the crew staged an enormous opening sequence involving hundreds of performers. Weeks of preparation went into constructing the elaborate set, though the nature of Siddiqui’s role remains deliberately concealed. Reports suggest his character will not fit neatly into the mould of a villain. Sohum has guided the project from its earliest drafts to the shaping of its visual identity, while Adesh Prasad – co-writer of the original film – directs the continuation. The shoot begins with a spectacle, expanding across late March into vast crowd scenes designed to immerse audiences in the scale of this imagined world. The first ‘Tumbbad’ released in 2018 earned acclaim for weaving together myth, greed and supernatural dread against the backdrop of a rain-soaked village in Maharashtra.
