Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla virtuoso passed away at the age of 73 in a San Francisco hospital, his family confirmed on Monday. The renowned musician succumbed to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis following a two-week hospitalisation. His condition worsened in recent days, leading to his transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Widely considered the greatest tabla player of his era, Zakir Hussain leaves behind a profound musical legacy. He is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola and their daughters, Anisa and Isabella Qureshi. Born on March 9, 1951, to the iconic Ustad Alla Rakha, Zakir’s artistry transcended borders, influencing musicians worldwide. The family shared in a statement, “He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come.” The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry, including heartfelt remembrances from Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Adnan Sami and Hansal Mehta.
